Surf the Sky on an E-Foil

June 14, 2022

At Xplorie, our guests continue to seek unique vacation experiences and we strive hard to deliver. Xplorie guests can now experience the freedom of e-foiling, a dream water toy with cutting-edge technology and a massive fun factor!

There’s no more need for a surf check, you can now surf without waves, on any body of water. The electric hydrofoil surfboard is the latest trend taking the surfing culture to new heights, used around the world for paddleboarding, surfing, kite surfing, windsurfing, and even sailing.

How does the e-foil work? A wing-like hydrofoil extends below the board cutting into the water and lifting the board above the surface into the air. The board is powered by high voltage lithium-ion batteries mounted on the hydrofoil and a handheld Bluetooth controller is used to engage the propeller and navigate the water. It’s completely silent, peaceful, and the sensation of flying on water and surfing on air simultaneously has been described as riding on a magic carpet or snowboarding through deep, fresh powder.

The art to e-foiling is in positioning and shifting your feet to provide balance, control, and speed. Start with the balance and gain control, before moving onto the speed. You don’t need a lot of speed to get the eFoil going, a couple of energetic pumps will create your own speed and, once you’re confident, the hydrofoil board can travel at speeds of up to 25mph, for up to 90 minutes without charge. With a little professional instruction, you’ll be riding and gliding in no time. Or, you can always book an extended stay to master the art!

Maui, Hawaii

The history of hydro foiling dates back to the middle of the 19th century when experiments began to build a hydrofoil boat, but it was famous Hawaiian waterman and big wave surfer, Laird Hamilton, who brought eFoiling to the forefront of the surf culture in the 2003 documentary, Step into Liquid.

A new surfing trend quickly began, and surfers were strapped into snowboard style boots, towed onto big waves, and foil boarding the top surf spots on Hawaii. Later in 2016, footage of Maui-born waterman Kai Lenny catching 11 waves in a row (and having a blast!) on a hydrofoil went viral, demand for the innovative electric board exploded, and e-foil board orders soared.

One of the best ways to immerse yourself in Hawaiian culture and experience Maui’s warm, tropical ocean is to learn to surf on Maui. The west coast of Maui boasts miles of coastline with beautiful bays, beaches, and calm waters for flying surfboards! Gliding through the Pacific Ocean on an e-foil is an unforgettable adventure with colorful coral reefs teeming with marine life, sea turtles, and whale watching from the water in the winter months.
